Churches

The Church of Saint Theresa dates back to the second half of the 18th century, when it was rebuilt after the 1743-earthquake. It was built in honour of Teresa Adami, a nun from Nardò, who directed the monastery of the Discalced Carmelites in the adjacent convent for many years. It is located in the historic centre of Nardò, nearby the Immaculate Church.

The church has a Rococo style and inside there is a majestic altar made of stone and marble, an oil painting depicting the Ecstasy of St. Theresa, the decorations made of very elegant stucco and the papier-mâché statue of St. Blaise, which is the patron saint of otorhinolaryngologists and the faithful pray for him to cure them of throat diseases (he saved a child who was choking on a fishbone).

Every year on 3rd February, the citizens of Nardò honour the rite of the blessing of the throat by priests and deacons, from the early hours of the day until late in the evening.
