The Alto Salento Jonico area, which includes the municipalities of Nardò, Gallipoli, Porto Cesareo and Racale, was awarded with the Five Sails. The guide The most beautiful sea 2019 by Legambiente and Touring Club Italiano awarded the precious recognition for the attention to the environment and clean waters, but also for the excellent food and wine products, itineraries and places of art.

2020Sea, waste, mobility: the Alto Salento Jonico area "repeats" the recognition of 2019.

As in 2019, the Alto Salento Jonico area - which includes the territories of the municipalities of Nardò, Gallipoli, Porto Cesareo and Racale - was awarded with the Five Sails . Legambiente and Touring Club Italiano awarded the territory of the Ionian coast of Salento the precious recognition for its attention to the environment and clean water, but also for a series of other parameters (about a hundred) such as food and wine excellence, quality of accommodation facilities, itineraries, places of art, waste management and sustainable mobility.

The Alto Salento Jonico area can still preserve the Five Sails thanks to sustainable waste management, slow mobility, energy efficiency policies and the enhancement of coastal towers. Nardò, in particular, has distinguished itself for promoting sustainable mobility, exceeding 70% of separate waste collection and enhancing the coastal towers with maintenance work.
